WHY SPECIFIC REHAB FOR HAMSTRING INJURIES IS SO IMPORTANT

Hamstring rehabilitation exercises for running and sport

Hamstring injuries are one of the most commonly re-injured areas in sport and exercise, often because rehabilitation is progressed too quickly or key components of recovery are overlooked. The hamstrings are exposed to very high loads during sprinting, acceleration, lifting, bending and running, meaning rehabilitation must carefully balance tissue healing with progressive strengthening and mobility.

The Hamstring muscle group also works closely with the glutes, pelvis and lower back, meaning poor movement control, reduced strength, stiffness or overload through surrounding structures can all contribute to ongoing symptoms and recurrence. That’s why rehabilitation should not simply focus on stretching or isolated strengthening, but instead progressively target mobility, muscle capacity, tendon loading, pelvic control and functional movement patterns.

This program takes you through six progressive stages across 12 weeks using the latest and most effective Physiotherapy rehabilitation exercises. You’ll receive detailed instructions, sets and repetitions, and educational videos to help guide exercise technique, movement quality and loading progression—helping you achieve a safe recovery and successful return to exercise, running and sport.

PROGRAM PRE-REQUISITES

PROGRAM PRE-REQUISITES

Before commencing this rehabilitation program, you must meet the following criteria to ensure safety and suitability:

1. No acute hamstring avulsion injury requiring surgery
You should not commence this program if you have sustained a proximal or distal hamstring avulsion tear that is awaiting surgical repair.

2. At least one week post-injury
A minimum of 7 days should have passed since the initial injury to allow for early healing and reduction of acute inflammation. Extensive bruising, swelling, or sudden loss of strength should be medically assessed before starting rehabilitation.

3. For surgical cases - you must have clearance from your surgeon to start rehab
Many surgery protocols require a rest period before starting stretching and strengthening exercises. If in doubt postpone this program until cleared by a healthcare professional.

4. No radicular pain from lumbar spine pathology
Hamstring pain must not be caused by referred symptoms like sciatica from a lumbar spine injury or disc herniation. If you experience radiating pain, seek medical assessment before proceeding.

5. Medical consultation for unresolved or severe symptoms
If you have constant pain, significant inflammation, or an undiagnosed injury, consult your Physiotherapist and/or Physician before starting this program.
