Designed by Physiotherapist Tim Keeley, this structured 24-week knee rehabilitation program helps guide recovery after knee injury or surgery, combining over 27 years of clinical experience with progressive strengthening, mobility, balance and return-to-activity principles.

WHY RECOVERY FROM KNEE INJURY OR SURGERY REQUIRES A PLAN

Recovering from a knee injury or surgery can be frustrating and confusing without a clear rehabilitation plan. Many people are unsure what exercises to perform, when to progress, how much activity is safe and when they can return to walking, work, exercise or sport. Every stage of recovery builds upon the previous one. Progressing too quickly can increase pain and swelling, while progressing too slowly can lead to stiffness, weakness and delayed recovery. Having a structured plan helps remove uncertainty and provides clear guidance throughout the rehabilitation journey.

Without a structured rehabilitation plan, many people never fully regain the strength, mobility and confidence required for a successful recovery. This can result in ongoing problems such as:

  • Ongoing knee stiffness and reduced movement
  • Persistent swelling, pain or irritation
  • Quadriceps, hamstring and gluteal weakness
  • Poor balance, control and confidence
  • Difficulty with stairs, squats, lunges or running
  • Delayed return to work, gym, exercise or sport

  • Knee Injury and Surgery Rehab Program

This program progressively guides you through every stage of rehabilitation with detailed instruction videos, movement cueing, exercise progressions and weekly goals designed to help restore confidence, strength and athletic function.

    WHY THIS PROGRAM WAS CREATED

    Why this program was created

Over the past 27 years, Tim has treated thousands of knee injury and post-operative knee surgery patients in the clinic. One of the biggest challenges people face is knowing what exercises to perform, when to progress and how to safely return to activity without doing too much or too little.

This program was developed using the same rehabilitation principles and progression systems used every day in the clinic, providing a structured pathway from early rehabilitation through to advanced strength, balance, function and return to activity.

    PROGRAM PRE-REQUISITES

    PROGRAM PRE-REQUISITES

Before commencing this rehabilitation program, you must meet the following criteria to ensure safety and suitability:

    1. Had a knee injury or knee surgery

If you have associated restrictions following surgery, such as meniscal repair, cartilage procedures, patella surgery, fracture management or ligament injury, continue following your Surgeon’s or Physiotherapist’s guidelines regarding knee range of movement, bracing and weight bearing progression.

    2. Medical clearance to commence rehabilitation
You should have clearance from your Surgeon, Physiotherapist and/or healthcare professional to begin a structured rehabilitation program.

    3. Suitable early rehabilitation timeframe
For surgical patients, you should generally be at least 4–7 days post-operative, with pain and swelling beginning to settle and no immediate post-operative complications.
Non-operative patients may begin once the acute pain and swelling phase has started to improve and gentle movement and weight bearing can be tolerated.

    4. No signs of infection or significant post-operative complications
You should not have increasing redness, excessive heat, discharge, severe calf pain, excessive swelling, fevers, or wound healing complications. If concerned, seek immediate medical review.

    5. Safe to begin movement and weight bearing
You should be able to begin gentle knee movement and some level of weight bearing, with crutches or bracing if required, as advised by your healthcare provider.

    6. Follow any brace or movement restrictions prescribed
If you have associated injuries such as a meniscal repair or MCL injury requiring bracing or movement restrictions, continue following your Surgeon’s or Physiotherapist’s guidelines regarding knee range of movement, bracing and weight bearing progression throughout this stage.
